Sunday Morning Bonus Pulp: Science Fiction Quarterly, February 1957

Ed Emshwiller is one of the classic science fiction cover artists, and this is a pretty good one. This issue of SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY has a good line-up of well-regarded authors inside, too: Frederik Pohl, Philip K. Dick, Wallace West, Randall Garrett, and Margaret St. Clair. I don't know anything about D.A. Jourdan, who wrote the other story featured on the cover.

SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY was the last SF magazine in the pulp format. I started buying the SF magazines in February 1956 and by then they were just about all in the smaller digest size except for SF QUARTERLY. So I came in on the very end of the pulp era.

I thought Jourdan might be a pen name, so I checked the ISFDB. There were 6 six stories published under that byline from 1954 to 1957, all in magazines edited by Bob Lowndes, most of them SF Quarterly. I wonder if Lowndes was double dipping and paying himself for his own short stories if the submissions were thin.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

If you want to know about D.A. Jourdan, look at the August 1958 SCIENCE FICTION STORIES, specifically the "Author, Author!" feature. (I don't have it.)

And, arguably, the last few issues of FANTASTIC UNIVERSE returned to the pulp format in 1960, and the legatees of the Thrilling Group, WONDER STORIES issues published by Popular Library in the 1960s, were also in pulp format, irregular issues of sf story reprints from the TWS and SS issues of the past, perhaps the others in the stable as well. A TREASURY OF GREAT SF STORIES issues followed, I believe in digest format, along with a western companion.
